Dear Dell Rapids Families,
I am writing to inform you of a change to the 2026–27 school calendar. At its September meeting, the Dell Rapids School Board approved a 1:30 p.m. early dismissal on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to provide time for districtwide staff professional development.
During the school day on October 29, our middle and high school students will participate in an age-appropriate presentation from Gruvy Education focused on the responsible use of artificial intelligence. The presentation will emphasize protecting personal information and privacy, thinking critically about AI-generated information, making responsible decisions, and maintaining the importance of human relationships and authentic learning in an increasingly digital world.
Following the 1:30 p.m. dismissal, teachers will participate in approximately two hours of professional development focused on the responsible and effective use of AI in education. The training will address protecting student learning, appropriate AI use, and ways educators can use AI as a tool to improve efficiency and the quality of instruction.
Haven will be open and available for students who normally attend the program following dismissal. District transportation will operate according to the 1:30 p.m. dismissal schedule.
Please note that there is no school on Friday, October 30, as previously scheduled on the district calendar. Teachers will participate in additional professional development throughout the day.
We recognize that changes to the school calendar can require families to adjust schedules and childcare arrangements. We wanted to provide as much advance notice as possible and appreciate your flexibility and understanding.
If you have questions regarding the October 29 early dismissal, please contact your child's school office.
Thank you for your continued support of the Dell Rapids School District.
Joel Bailey
