Basic Steps to Access Information & How to Cite your Sources

The South Dakota State Library in Pierre offers several databases for free to students. The Librarian's favorite options are listed below and are very user friendly, providing reliable, accurate information. You have instant access to them at school. For use at home, please ask the librarian for the username/password to log in!  To access the databases, go to www.library.sd.gov, click on Electronic Resources, and click on A-Z Listing. From that list, choose from the following:

World Book: This is an online encyclopedia. Click one of the articles to read or click on “Tools” and then click “Hear text read aloud.” If you use an article from here, you’ll need to give it credit on your Works Cited Page by completing the following steps: While you have your article open, click on Tools, from the drop down menu click Citations, highlight the information listed under MLA, hit Ctrl + C to copy, open your Google Document, hit Ctrl + V to paste it on your Works Cited Page.

Gale Virtual Reference Library: Offers online books. From your results page click on the “View eBook” blue button. While the actual book may be hundreds of pages long, this option brings you right to the page where info on your topic will be. Click on the arrows to move back & forth through pages or click on the Table of Contents button to see a full list of what the book has to offer. If you use a book from here, you’ll need to give it credit on your Works Cited Page by completing the following steps: While you are in the book, click on Citation Tools, from the drop down menu click MLA, highlight the information listed under MLA, hit Ctrl + C to copy, open your Google Document, hit Ctrl + V to paste it on your Works Cited Page.

EBSCO MegaFILE / Explora Libraries / ProQuest Research Library / SIRS: Offers online encyclopedias, books, newspapers, magazines, journals, videos and more to research your person. To narrow your results, scroll and look at the side toolbar, clicking the biography  option, for example, will help you find the reserach you need faster. You can unclick this option at any time to see your full results list. Click the “Listen” button at the top of your article if you prefer to have the article read to you. (ProQuest does not offer audio option). If you use a resource from here, you’ll need to give it credit on your Works Cited Page by completing the following steps: While you have your resource open, from the side panel labeled Tools, click on Cite or Citation, and choose the option labeled MLA, highlight the information listed under MLA, hit Ctrl + C to copy, open your Google Document, hit Ctrl + V to paste it on your Works Cited Page.

MLA Citation Links

Give credit to your sources, here's some info & links to help with your Works Cited Page!

Using Google Docs? Download the app: While in your Google Doc, click the Add-ons tab, click Get add-ons, search for citation, select the Easy-Bib Bibliography Creator. Let the app work for you: To create a citation, click the Add-ons tab, click EasyBib then Manage Bibliography. A side panel will open, choose your source type, enter your info, select the MLA style, hit enter. Once your citation is created, click the button labeled  ADD BIBLIOGRAPHY TO DOC, and you're done!
